Postpartum depression can happen to anyone. Normal feelings of sadness and being overwhelmed after having a baby are completely normal. We call it “baby blues”. It happens because the mother has undergone a major life change. Her body has changed, her social relationships have changed, she is not sleeping, having sex, and is experiencing a drop in hormone levels, which during pregnancy were elevated and provided an “emotional high.”

When these feelings of sadness, change in concentration, guilt, decreased energy, hopelessness and appetite changes extend beyond two weeks after birth, doctors worry about postpartum depression.

Although any woman can be diagnosed, there are risk factors that do exist. A very young or older mom are at higher risk, as is someone who had not planned her pregnancy. A mother who has financial worries or lack of social support is also at increased risk to develop depression. Someone who has pre-existing depression or a strong family history will more likely be diagnosed with depression.

If a mother notices her baby blues are lasting longer than two weeks, she should call her health care provider. Treatment options include making social changes, therapy and medications. The depression is never normal if it interferes with ability to take care of the baby.

The great news about postpartum depression is that doctors are better educated about it to both treat and diagnose it. This particular depression does not last forever, symptoms are usually gone by a year’s time.

Belly support bands are rapidly becoming one of the most popular purchases that pregnant moms make. The reason, a lot of pregnant moms experience back pain, due to the rapidly growing uterus, the change in a woman’s center of gravity, the greater curvature of the lower spine due to pregnancy, and stretching and strain on the back muscles. Belly support bands help lift the pregnant belly, relieving back, belly and bladder pressure. These bands when fitted correctly can also relieve sciatic nerve pain.

Many patients choose to wear these bands all day, some only while working out, and some while they are at work. The bands are safe and can really lend a helping hand to a mother in need.

It is unsafe to lose weight rapidly after giving birth. A woman should avoid exercise for 6 weeks after delivery. After that period of time, it is recommended to begin a work out regimen that was less intense than pre-pregnancy, until a woman’s body gets used to working out again. It may take a while to build up stamina and muscle mass. Remember that it is normal to be fighting fatigue due to sleepless nights with a newborn, so workout times may be 20-30 minutes max. Do not pressure yourself and do what you can.

As far as diet goes, a woman can boost her metabolism and weight loss, by eating 5-6 mini-meals per day. Maximizing calories from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains also supports weight loss. Calorie restriction should be kept at safe levels. A woman in the post partum period should never consume less than 1200 calories per day and a nursing mother never less than 1800 calories per day. A reasonable goal is to lose 1-2 pounds per week. Studies show that mothers that lose weight at a slower pace are more likely to keep the weight off!

When they talk, she listens. Through the years she heard complaints that came up time and again during the pregnancy and post pregnancy process. This helped Dr. Javaid focus on developing products that offer practical solutions. Being a mother of three also gave her unique insight and motivation to solve some of the common concerns of new motherhood.

So, she and business partner Kim Howell decided to pursue their dreams of helping women everywhere by creating mamadoc , a company designed to develop and deliver practical pregnancy products. She and her family live in Ohio where she is in active practice and is currently working on her first book, An Insider’s Guide to Pregnancy, Delivery, and Motherhood.

Encouraging Somi to create a prototype for the first product, Nox compression bra, Kim enlisted her Mom to sew the creation that the two had envisioned.

Kim remembers the days of nursing her sons as some of the best days of her life and hated the idea of weaning. The emotional separation was painful enough and adding the physical discomfort was overwhelming. “I did the ace bandage and cabbage leaf thing and still experienced discomfort” so when Somi told Kim of her idea for a compression bra (during a power walk around the soccer field) to help women ease the pain during the weaning process, she knew a product like this could make a difference. Many power walks and brainstorming sessions later and mamadoc evolved with various products to help women through pregnancy and post pregnancy.

Going green, why bamboo?

Due to the many naturally inherent benefits of bamboo, mamadoc utilizes this fabric on all of our pregnancy products. The fibers are without chemical treatment and are naturally smoother and rounder with no sharp spurs to irritate the skin. Rayon from bamboo fabric contains a naturally occurring agent called “kun” that prevents bacteria from cultivating and the bamboo plant can grow without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. This is what keeps you odor free.

Rayon from bamboo is extremely breathable and four times more absorbent than cotton to keep you comfortable and dry.

The bamboo plant is a tropical grass that can grow 3-5 feet within a 24 hour period and returns 30% more oxygen into the atmosphere than trees.

Natural Wicking Capabilities for Great Absorbency

Naturally Antifungal

Odor Resistant

Cashmere Like Feel

Temperature Regulating: cool in summer, warm in winter
